UK Government Bans IRGC Under National Security Legislation
The UK government has taken decisive action by officially proscribing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and associated groups under the National Security Act 2023, which has been amended by the National Security (State Threats) Act 2026. This new legislation empowers the Home Secretary to designate organizations that pose a threat to UK interests through foreign power activities. It introduces severe penalties for individuals who support, assist, or benefit from these designated bodies, with maximum sentences reaching life imprisonment.
The decision to ban the IRGC comes despite advice from independent reviewer Jonathan Hall KC, who cautioned against such proscription. He argued that legislating against a state-linked group under terror laws presents significant challenges. However, the government has determined that the new framework is necessary to safeguard national security. This move marks a significant shift in the UK's approach to dealing with foreign entities perceived as threats, reflecting growing concerns over national security and foreign influence.
