Binance Allocates $6.34 Billion to Cover Losses from Major Security Breach
Binance has announced that it will absorb the financial impact of a recent security breach, which resulted in the theft of approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets. The cryptocurrency exchange has set aside over $6.34 billion from its Secure Asset Fund for Users to cover the losses incurred during the incident. In a statement, Binance emphasized that users would not bear any financial losses due to the breach, reaffirming its commitment to user security.
Following the breach, Binance has successfully replaced around 80% of the stolen tokens, including major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC. The exchange is actively working to restore withdrawal services in phases, with plans to release an updated Proof of Reserves report to reassure users about the backing of their account balances.
The breach occurred on October 29, when Binance's hot wallets were compromised, leading to unauthorized withdrawals. The exchange reported that it has managed to freeze approximately $3 billion worth of the stolen assets through collaboration with law enforcement and blockchain intelligence firms. This effort is part of Binance's broader strategy to recover the stolen funds and enhance security measures.
Clearance Granted
Binance's investigation into the breach has revealed that the initial assessment pointed to a compromised laptop, but further inquiries have uncovered additional points of intrusion. The company has stated that there is no evidence of wallet private keys being leaked, and it plans to provide a detailed technical report on the breach and the security enhancements it will implement.
In a concerning development, blockchain investigation firms have linked the theft to a North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor. Cybersecurity experts have noted that funds obtained through such thefts may be used to finance North Korea's weapons programs. Binance has not publicly identified the perpetrators but has indicated that its investigation is ongoing and will continue to cooperate with relevant authorities to address the situation.
