2028 BMW ALPINA 7 Series Prototype Spotted at Nürburgring

2028 BMW ALPINA 7 Series Prototype Spotted at Nürburgring

The first prototype of the 2028 BMW ALPINA 7 Series has been captured by car enthusiasts at the Nürburgring, producing an impressive sound from its V8 engine. Until now, the existence of the upcoming 7 Series G72 had been supported only by rumors and vague details from BMW. However, this prototype marks a significant step in confirming its development.

The heavily camouflaged prototype reveals several distinguishing features compared to the regular 7 Series. Notably, the daytime running lights exhibit an amber hue, reminiscent of the lighting signature seen in the Vision BMW ALPINA concept earlier this year. It remains uncertain whether this unique design will make it to production, but it could potentially become a hallmark of future models, similar to the yellow lighting planned for M Performance vehicles.

Additionally, the kidney grille appears to have fewer horizontal slats than that of the standard 7 Series, although it is unclear if this prototype includes all the final production components. The lower bumper and central air intake have been redesigned, while the rear showcases ALPINA's signature oval exhaust tips.

The prototype is fitted with black alloy wheels accented with silver, although BMW has indicated that ALPINA-specific wheels featuring a classic multi-spoke design will be introduced. This design has been a staple of the Buchloe-based company for many years.

The test vehicle does not seem to be larger than the current 7 Series G70, suggesting that BMW will not extend the wheelbase. This is not necessarily a drawback, as the existing flagship already offers ample space for rear passengers. Lengthening it further could encroach on the territory of the Rolls-Royce Ghost, a scenario BMW likely wishes to avoid.

Engine Innovations and Performance Expectations

The most intriguing aspect of this prototype is undoubtedly its sound. It appears to be equipped with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which BMW has confirmed will be specially tuned for the ALPINA variant of the 7 Series. While the 4.4-liter engine already produces a robust 563 horsepower in the new M760 xDrive, the ALPINA version is expected to prioritize low-end torque for a more effortless grand touring experience.

Historically, ALPINA has focused on blending smooth acceleration with exceptional long-distance comfort. Therefore, chassis and suspension modifications are anticipated to accompany the upgraded engine, creating a refined alternative to traditional M-badged performance vehicles.

An electric variant is also likely, presumably based on the i7 M70. BMW has shown its commitment to offering both combustion and electric powertrains under the ALPINA brand, with the existing i7 serving as a suitable foundation for a zero-emission flagship. While the V8 prototype is currently in the spotlight, it is expected that multiple powertrain options will be available.

Final Assessment

This model represents a significant milestone as BMW develops its first production ALPINA vehicle following its full acquisition of the brand, which took effect on January 1, 2026. BMW aims to position ALPINA between its standard lineup and Rolls-Royce, providing customers with an additional choice in the competitive ultra-luxury market. This strategy involves more than just enhancing power and adding cosmetic upgrades; it will also emphasize exclusive materials, extensive customization, and superior craftsmanship to compete with brands like Maybach and Bentley.

The 7 Series will be the first to embody this new direction, with an ALPINA version of the next-generation X7, known internally as the G69, also in development. The sedan is expected to debut in 2027, followed by the SUV a year later.
