Binance Reports Major Security Breach Affecting $6.3 Billion in Assets
Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, reported on Thursday a major security incident that has impacted around $6.3 billion worth of assets. The company revealed that nearly $3 billion of these assets have already been frozen on-chain as part of their response to the breach.
In connection with the incident, Tether and Circle announced they have frozen over 1.5 billion USDT and 800 million related to the breach. Additionally, the Arbitrum Security Council executed a transaction to freeze approximately $30.5 million linked to the exploit.
According to Binance, initial investigations suggest that the breach may have stemmed from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer, which allowed an attacker to access a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. The company emphasized that there is no evidence indicating a leak of wallet private keys and assured users that all losses would be covered by the Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and its own funds.
Approved for Dissemination
In light of the incident, Binance is collaborating closely with law enforcement to identify the perpetrators and ensure they are brought to justice. This breach marks the largest cryptocurrency heist recorded to date, surpassing the previous record theft of approximately $1.5 billion from Bybit in February 2025, which was attributed to North Korean hackers.
Blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis estimated that the amount stolen in this incident is around $5.912 billion at the time of the theft, nearly four times the amount stolen in the next largest crypto heist. As the situation continues to develop, Binance has urged users to stay informed and updated on the matter.
