Binance Freezes $3 Billion in Crypto Assets Amid Security Breach Investigation

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has announced the freezing of $3 billion in crypto assets while it investigates a potential security breach. This action follows the involvement of stablecoin issuers Circle and Tether, who have also frozen assets related to the incident. Binance co-founder Yi He stated that the company would cover all hacking losses but did not provide further details about the breach.

The market reacted swiftly to the news, with Bitcoin experiencing a decline of approximately 2%, reaching a six-week low of $77,646, while ether fell around 2% to a two-month low of $2,238.76. The exchange's own token, BNB, saw a drop of more than 8% in the past 24 hours, trading at $694, according to data from CoinGecko. Other crypto exchanges, such as Coinbase Global, also faced declines, with shares dropping by 4.8% in extended trading.

As Binance continues its investigation, the amount of frozen assets may increase. The company is collaborating with law enforcement agencies, token issuers, and blockchain intelligence firms to trace and secure additional funds. Changpeng Zhao, another co-founder of Binance, indicated on social media that the situation appeared to be a hack.

With over 335 million registered users and approximately $160 billion in assets under custody, Binance has implemented a secure asset fund designed to protect user assets in the event of security breaches. Bernardo Brites, CEO of Trace Finance, commented on the challenges of countering hacks, noting that artificial intelligence can identify vulnerabilities faster than they can be addressed. He suggested that users might begin to avoid smaller exchanges due to the increasing risks associated with security breaches.

Tether reported freezing nearly $1.57 billion in assets linked to the incident, while Circle froze over $800 million. Binance is conducting thorough security checks and plans to resume withdrawals once the situation is fully resolved, assuring users that their funds remain safe. The exchange has also temporarily suspended trading on its Binance Alpha platform as a precautionary measure.

Collaborative Efforts to Secure Stolen Funds

In a related development, World Liberty Financial, a crypto company associated with former President Donald Trump, stated it had collaborated with cryptocurrency custodian BitGo to freeze funds that were reportedly stolen in the hack. Binance's Yi confirmed that $27 million in stablecoins and approximately $2 million in World Liberty tokens had been frozen. Additionally, crypto firm Ripple froze around $200 million in funds, with its senior vice president of stablecoins closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with relevant parties.

Miguel Morel, CEO of blockchain intelligence firm Arkham, indicated that data suggested billions of dollars may have been hacked from Binance by an unidentified actor, although the precise cause of the breach remains unconfirmed. The incident reportedly began around 8:30 PM Irish time and is still ongoing.

Final Assessment

This breach adds to a troubling trend in the cryptocurrency sector, where attackers stole $2.9 billion worth of digital assets across nearly 150 incidents last year. In September, another exchange, Bitget, reported a theft of approximately $350 million, highlighting the industry's vulnerability to cyberattacks. Authorities have raised concerns that organized crime groups are increasingly utilizing cryptocurrencies to facilitate cross-border transactions outside traditional financial systems.

Binance.US, a separate entity from Binance, stated that it was not affected by the security incident, and Coinbase confirmed it was also unaffected while monitoring the situation. In an unrelated event, prediction market operator Polymarket temporarily halted trading due to a security issue with a third-party provider but later resumed operations and pledged to reimburse affected traders.
