Major Crypto Firms Freeze Billions Amid Binance Security Incident
Major cryptocurrency companies took swift action on Thursday to freeze billions of dollars in digital assets that may be linked to a security breach at Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volume. Although Binance has not confirmed that its platform was hacked, it has acknowledged reports of a potential security incident and is currently conducting an investigation.
A spokesperson for Binance stated, "Our teams are aware of reports of a potential security issue and are actively investigating. Rest assured that user funds are completely safe. Our security teams are reviewing all relevant information with urgency, and we will provide updates through official Binance channels as soon as we have verified information."
In the wake of these reports, several prominent cryptocurrency firms announced measures to prevent the transfer of funds that might be associated with the incident. Circle Internet Group's CEO Jeremy Allaire revealed that his company had frozen over 800 million USD Coin tokens related to the suspected breach. Meanwhile, Tether's CEO Paolo Ardoino announced on social media that Tether had blocked more than 1.5 billion USDT tokens that could be linked to the incident.

Additionally, Binance co-founder Yi He disclosed that Ripple, the cryptocurrency company associated with XRP and RLUSD, had assisted in preventing the movement of another $200 million in funds potentially connected to the suspected attack. The total amount of cryptocurrency affected could be significantly larger than the assets that have been frozen thus far.
The news of the suspected breach and the subsequent actions taken by these companies coincided with declines across major cryptocurrency markets. Bitcoin experienced a drop of over 3%, falling below $80,000, while Ether saw a decline of nearly 4%, and Solana lost approximately 3%.
