Binance Investigates Potential $5.8 Billion Security Breach
Cryptocurrency exchange Binance is currently investigating a potential security breach that could involve up to $5.8 billion in digital assets. If confirmed, this incident may become the largest cryptocurrency hack in history, surpassing the $1.5 billion stolen from Bybit by North Korean hackers in February 2025, which is the largest confirmed crypto heist to date.
The suspected breach has led stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle to freeze over $2.3 billion in assets linked to the incident. A spokesperson from Binance confirmed to BleepingComputer that the exchange is looking into reports of a potential security issue while assuring customers that their funds remain safe. The spokesperson stated, "Our teams are aware of reports of a potential security issue and are actively investigating. Rest assured that user funds are completely safe."
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, indicated on social media that the incident appears to be a hack. He noted that he no longer manages the exchange but expects that all user funds will be fully covered. Tether's CEO, Paolo Ardoino, reported that the company had frozen more than $1.567 billion in USDT related to the potential Binance hack. Similarly, Circle's CEO, Jeremy Allaire, confirmed that over $800 million in USDC had been frozen, adding that Circle is coordinating with law enforcement to support the investigation.
Reports have surfaced indicating that billions of dollars in cryptocurrency were transferred from multiple Binance hot wallets to a newly created Ethereum address. Blockchain transaction analysis revealed that a Binance hot wallet, referred to as "Binance 14," transferred approximately $2.53 billion across 64 different cryptocurrency tokens. This was followed by another transfer of $174.4 million from a second Binance wallet just 24 seconds later.
Details of Cryptocurrency Transfers Uncovered
In total, a third Binance hot wallet reportedly transferred an additional 780 million USDC to the same Ethereum address, bringing the total amount involved to around $3.48 billion. Blockchain intelligence platform Arkham Intelligence is currently tracking 55 cryptocurrency addresses associated with an entity labeled "binance-hacker-1029," which holds assets valued at approximately $5.78 billion. This figure includes around $1.77 billion in USDT, $1.44 billion in Bitcoin, $876 million in Ethereum, and $823 million in USDC.
Final Assessment
It is important to note that Arkham's $5.78 billion figure represents the total value of assets across all tracked wallets, rather than a confirmed amount stolen from Binance. As of now, Binance has not confirmed whether the transfers were unauthorized, how the suspected breach occurred, or the total value of any stolen assets. This situation is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
As the investigation unfolds, Binance has urged customers to remain vigilant against scams and to avoid unofficial links, messages, or requests for account information. The exchange's security teams are reviewing all relevant information with urgency and will provide updates through official Binance channels as soon as verified information is available. The cryptocurrency community is closely monitoring the situation, given the potential implications for security and trust in digital asset exchanges.
