IDF Soldier Indicted for Spying for Iran Over One Year

A serious security breach has emerged involving an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldier who has been indicted for allegedly working with Iranian intelligence operatives for about a year. The soldier, who was arrested in September, is accused of passing sensitive military information and following directives from his Iranian handlers in exchange for payments made through cryptocurrency.

The Military Prosecution filed the indictment, charging the soldier with providing information to the enemy with the intent to harm state security, as well as contact with a foreign agent. The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), the Ayalon District investigative unit of the Israel Police, the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division's Central Unit for Special Investigations, and the IDF's Information Security Department.

According to the findings of the investigation, the soldier maintained contact with Iranian operatives for approximately one year. During this time, he shared information regarding his unit's operational activities, as well as details about the IDF's readiness and emergency mobilization procedures. Notably, he provided information about his own emergency call-up following the onset of Operation Roaring Lion.

The investigation revealed that the soldier was aware that he was communicating with an Iranian operative, yet he continued to engage with them and execute the tasks assigned to him. In return for his espionage activities, he received payments directed through cryptocurrency wallets, as instructed by his handler.

Scope of Espionage Activities Revealed

The information shared by the soldier extended beyond his unit's activities. Security officials indicated that he also disclosed details about military bases, their locations, and even photographed interceptor missiles, military vehicles, and American refueling aircraft stationed at an airport in Israel for his handler.

One of the most alarming aspects of the investigation was the personal information the soldier provided about his fellow servicemen and commanders. He shared their personal details with his handler, fully aware that the Iranian operative would likely attempt to recruit them for espionage purposes as well.

Additionally, the soldier provided his handler with information about a Telegram group called "Kal Bakrav," which is aimed at Israelis preparing to enlist in the IDF. Following this, the Iranian handler joined the group. During their communications, the handler instructed the soldier to install malicious applications for encrypted conversations and suggested that he purchase a basic mobile phone, commonly referred to as a "dumb phone," along with a handgun.

The investigation also uncovered that the two had agreed to use coded language in their communications and to develop a cover story in case their relationship was discovered by security forces. At one point, the soldier was even offered the chance to travel to Iran in exchange for a payment of $200,000.
