2028 BMW iX1 Undergoes Testing at Nürburgring with Major Redesign
The 2028 BMW iX1 is set to debut next year, showcasing a complete redesign that distinguishes it from the gas-powered X1. Currently undergoing rigorous testing at the Nürburgring, the prototype is heavily camouflaged, but it hints at a significant overhaul in both design and technology.
BMW plans to implement its Neue Klasse strategy for the next-generation iX1, moving it to a dedicated electric platform. This transition is expected to enhance the vehicle's range and charging capabilities significantly. Unlike the current model, which shares its architecture with the combustion-powered X1, the new iX1 will feature a unique internal codename, likely NB5, and will not follow the typical Life Cycle Impulse updates.
The exterior design of the iX1 is evolving, taking cues from the new iX3. The front end will sport a more upright kidney grille and slimmer headlights, while the bodywork will adopt a cleaner, more modern aesthetic. The rear will also see substantial changes, including a redesigned tailgate and wider taillights that may extend across the width of the vehicle.
Interior Upgrades and New Technology Features
Inside, the iX1 is expected to receive a comprehensive update, introducing the iDrive X interface and a minimalist layout. Features such as the Panoramic Vision projection and a central touchscreen will enhance the driving experience, moving away from the traditional iDrive knob.
Case Closed
While the gasoline and diesel versions of the X1 will receive a mid-cycle facelift, they will retain their existing front-wheel-drive architecture. In contrast, the new iX1 will offer rear-wheel drive for entry-level models and all-wheel drive options for higher trims, thanks to the new platform.
The anticipated launch of the redesigned iX1 is set for 2027, coinciding with the facelifted X1. Following its release, BMW plans to introduce a smaller, more affordable electric vehicle in Europe, potentially the long-rumored i1 hatchback, in 2028.
