DIA Reveals New Details on China's Shenlong Space Plane

DIA Reveals New Details on China's Shenlong Space Plane

The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has unveiled the clearest image yet of Shenlong, China's highly classified space plane. This unprecedented view, which shows the craft from below and highlights its distinctive rear-facing solar panel arrays, was included in the DIA's latest report titled "Challenges to Security in Space." This 130-page document assesses significant space-related threats to the U.S. and its allies, addressing issues such as orbital debris and the strategic ambitions of countries including China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea.

Captured by Maxar Technologies in 2024, the photo appears on page 53 of the report, where it is referred to simply as an unnamed Chinese "spaceplane." However, it is widely believed to be Shenlong, which has been shrouded in mystery since its existence was first acknowledged nearly two decades ago. The Shenlong prototype completed its initial two-day orbital mission in 2020, followed by a more extended 276-day mission in 2022. The recent photo coincides with a third known mission that began in December 2023, during which Shenlong reportedly "released and interacted with an object."

As of February 7, 2026, the Shenlong space plane is believed to be engaged in a fourth mission after launching from China's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. This places it in a similar category as the U.S. Space Force's X-37B, a reusable vehicle designed by Boeing that has been operating in low Earth orbit for over 431 days on its eighth classified mission. While details about Shenlong's capabilities remain largely classified, it is known that the vehicle measures over 29 feet in length, has a wingspan of nearly 15 feet, and can reach orbital speeds of 17,426 mph.

The U.S. Space Force has disclosed that the X-37B's eighth mission includes testing advanced laser communications technology and quantum measurement instruments, underscoring the competitive landscape in space technology. As nations continue to develop their capabilities in this domain, the implications for global security and intelligence remain significant.

Ongoing Developments in Space Technology

The release of this image and the information surrounding Shenlong highlight the increasing transparency of certain military technologies, even as many details remain classified. The DIA's report serves as a reminder of the evolving challenges in space security, particularly as nations like China advance their capabilities. The ongoing missions of Shenlong and similar vehicles will likely continue to be a focal point for intelligence assessments in the coming years.

Final Assessment

As the landscape of space technology evolves, the Shenlong space plane represents a significant element of China's strategic ambitions. The DIA's insights into this program provide a glimpse into the complexities of modern military capabilities in space, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and assessment of potential threats to national security.
