Two British Men Charged in Iran-Linked Plot at UK Air Base

Two British Men Charged in Iran-Linked Plot at UK Air Base

Two British men have been charged with national security offences in connection with a suspected plot targeting RAF Fairford, a US-operated military air base in western England. The air base has been used by American bombers for operations against Iran. Mohmed Ahmad Abdulkarim and Nouman Essghir, both 24 and residents of London, were charged under the National Security Act, according to the Crown Prosecution Service. They are expected to appear in court shortly.

Abdulkarim faces a charge of assisting Iran’s intelligence service, while Essghir has been accused of entering a prohibited site for a purpose prejudicial to the UK. The investigation began after Essghir was arrested outside RAF Fairford on September 27, which led to a significant security operation involving armed police and army bomb-disposal experts. Authorities evacuated numerous residents from nearby homes as they searched for explosives.

During the investigation, police discovered gasoline, an accelerant, in vans at the scene, although no explosives were found. Essghir was initially released on bail but was arrested again last week, while Abdulkarim was also arrested recently. Six other men have been arrested and released on bail as the investigation continues.

US Response to Iranian Threat Concerns

The incident prompted US authorities to withdraw their bombers from RAF Fairford due to concerns over a potential Iranian-linked threat. British officials have linked Tehran to the suspected plot, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham stating that the incident was “almost certainly” directed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Iran has denied any involvement, asserting that military bases used to attack its territory could be considered legitimate targets.

Cleared to File

The arrests come amid rising warnings from British intelligence officials regarding threats linked to foreign states. MI5 director general Ken McCallum recently highlighted that Iran and Russia are expanding their hostile activities in the UK, with Tehran reportedly seeking to broaden its targets beyond Iranians opposed to its Islamic authorities. McCallum noted that over 50 individuals have been arrested in the past year in connection with Iran-linked plots.

Laurence Taylor, assistant commissioner and head of National Counter Terrorism Policing in the UK, stated that authorities are actively working to identify and counter threats believed to be directed by Iran. He emphasized that there has been a range of incidents in recent months that are believed to have been orchestrated by the Iranian state.
