AFSOC Launches Thunder Dome Innovation Competition for 2027

Oct 25, 2026

Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is preparing for its fourth annual Thunder Dome Innovation Competition, scheduled for fiscal year 2027. This program provides an opportunity for Air Commandos to pitch their tactical concepts directly to senior leadership, aiming to secure development funding and prototype support.

The Thunder Dome initiative emphasizes the rapid development of innovative concepts into practical tools for frontline units. Proposals are welcomed from Airmen across various components, including active duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve. Winning teams will receive direct funding for innovation and advocacy from program offices to prototype, test, and implement their solutions.

Voting for the upcoming Thunder Dome Innovation Competition is currently open and will continue until October 26, 2026. Participants are encouraged to select the most promising ideas that can effectively tackle the command's toughest challenges. Each vote contributes to determining the finalists in this competitive process.

In anticipation of the next competition, several projects from last year's Thunder Dome program are already demonstrating significant benefits across multiple operational areas. One notable project, SilentSentinel, developed by the 193rd Special Operations Wing at Harrisburg International Airport, received $51,000 in funding. This team utilized additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping to create 27 custom-shielded lock boxes, which are now ready for tactical field evaluation and stress-testing in upcoming training exercises.

Another project, IRIS, initiated by the 137th Special Operations Wing at Will Rogers Air National Guard Base in Oklahoma, also secured $51,000. This initiative involved procuring specialized communications tracking tags and optical radio frequency scanners. Following initial validation, the Wing is working on integrating these technologies into its security forces, logistics readiness, and force support services.

Cleared to File

The 1st Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Florida, received $510,000 for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Range Modernization project. This effort aims to overhaul the training infrastructure for tactical demolition and munitions disposal, enhancing the training environment for Explosive Ordnance Disposal proficiency.

The Thunder Dome Innovation Competition continues to foster creativity and innovation within AFSOC, ensuring that Air Commandos have the tools they need to succeed in their missions.
