Marvel's Zodiac Series Hires New Writers as Details Emerge
Marvel Studios is preparing to re-enter the spy genre with its upcoming Disney+ series Zodiac, which has secured its writing team. Amit Cohen and Ron Leshem have been chosen to develop this new Marvel spy thriller, focusing on two agents who are on a mission to track down individuals with superhuman abilities.
Initially announced at New York Comic Con, details about Zodiac have been largely kept under wraps. However, it is known that the series will center around spies who are tasked with locating individuals possessing special powers. This direction represents an intriguing shift for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly if the series emphasizes the espionage elements of its superhero narrative.
Production for Zodiac is anticipated to commence in 2027, with a premiere date set for 2028 on Disney+. Cohen and Leshem bring a wealth of experience in suspense-driven television to the project. Leshem is notably recognized for co-creating the original Israeli series Euphoria, which inspired the acclaimed HBO adaptation featuring Zendaya and developed by Sam Levinson.
The duo has also been involved in creating and executive producing several Israeli series, including Trust No One, Bad Boy, 8200, Red Skies, and Traitor. Their background in thrillers and character-driven narratives positions them as a compelling choice for a Marvel series that appears to prioritize espionage over conventional superhero action.
Marvel's Shift in Television Strategy
Zodiac is being developed during a time when Marvel Studios is scaling back its live-action television offerings, with several established MCU shows concluding. The WandaVision trilogy is nearing its end with VisionQuest, which began airing on October 13 and will conclude with its finale on November 10. Additionally, Daredevil: Born Again is approaching its conclusion with Season 3 set for 2027, reintroducing several familiar Marvel characters into the MCU.
Marvel has also opted not to renew Wonder Man for a second season. Despite its brief run, the show garnered Yahya Abdul-Mateen II an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal of the title character, marking Marvel's first Emmy acting nomination since the success of WandaVision.
Approved for Dissemination
As several Marvel shows wrap up, Zodiac presents an opportunity to offer something distinct for Disney+ viewers. A spy thriller featuring superpowered targets holds significant potential, especially if it explores the more grounded and perilous aspects of the MCU.
While much remains unknown about Zodiac, including which Marvel characters may appear and its connections to the broader MCU, the concept is promising. With Cohen and Leshem's television expertise, this series could become an exciting addition to Marvel's streaming portfolio.
