Congress Demands Accountability from SBI Over Data Breach Incident
The Congress party has expressed alarm over a data breach at the State Bank of India (SBI), which reportedly exposed the personal information of 3,897 customers on the dark web. This incident has raised questions about the bank's cybersecurity measures and its ability to protect customer data. Pawan Khera, head of Congress's media and publicity department, criticized SBI for failing to detect the breach independently, stating that an external agency had to alert them about the exposure of sensitive customer information.
The leaked data includes personally identifiable information such as mobile numbers, dates of birth, names, email addresses, residential addresses, and details related to loans. Cybersecurity law expert Pawan Duggal described the breach as "no ordinary incident," highlighting the potential risks to national security due to the sensitive nature of the information involved. He emphasized that the leak could affect numerous government accounts, including those of public sector employees, thereby exposing critical government data.
SBI acknowledged the breach and stated that it had initiated an investigation after receiving alerts from its cybersecurity partners, including the Defence Cyber Agency and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). The bank reassured customers that their financial balances remain safe and that it is taking all necessary steps to mitigate the impact of the breach. SBI has activated its cyber incident response protocols and engaged an independent cybersecurity agency to assess the situation.
Final Assessment
In light of this incident, the Congress party has demanded accountability from SBI, insisting that the bank must inform affected customers and take responsibility for the breach. Khera asserted that a bank entrusted with the financial security of millions cannot afford such failures in data protection and breach detection.
This data breach comes amid a broader context of increasing cyber threats in India. Recently, CERT-In issued a critical advisory regarding unauthorized access to live systems by autonomous artificial intelligence agents, further underscoring the vulnerabilities faced by organizations in the digital landscape. As the investigation into the SBI breach continues, the implications for customer trust and national security remain a pressing concern.
