Two Men Rearrested in Connection with Alleged Iran Espionage Plot
British police announced on Tuesday that they have rearrested two men suspected of assisting Iran's intelligence service in a plot involving a U.S.-run air base in England. The arrests were made under the National Security Act and involve a 24-year-old British national and a 25-year-old dual U.K.-Iranian national. Previously, the men had been arrested but released on bail while further investigations were conducted.
The investigation centers around a suspected terror plot that occurred on September 27 at RAF Fairford, a base that has been utilized for bombing missions against Iran during the ongoing conflict this year. The police response included the evacuation of numerous residents from the surrounding area as armed officers and bomb disposal experts responded to the situation. Authorities reported finding gasoline in three vans at the site, although no explosives were discovered.
British officials have linked the incident to Tehran, prompting the U.S. to withdraw its bombers from RAF Fairford. Laurence Taylor, head of National Counter Terrorism Policing in the U.K., stated that investigators are exploring multiple lines of inquiry in what he described as a complex investigation. He emphasized that the evidence gathering is ongoing and that there is a high likelihood of Iranian state involvement.
Approved for Dissemination
Iranian officials have consistently claimed that any bases used to launch attacks against their country would be considered legitimate targets. However, the Iranian Embassy in London has previously rejected allegations linking Iran to this incident, describing them as unfounded and malicious.
In addition to the two men rearrested, five others who were arrested earlier remain on bail, and no charges have yet been filed against any of the suspects. The investigation continues as authorities seek to determine the extent of Iranian involvement and the motivations behind the alleged plot.
