Kristi Noem Faces Backlash Over New Hunting Dog Photo Amid Past Controversy
Kristi Noem is facing significant backlash online following her recent social media post featuring her new hunting dog, Foster. The photo, shared on October 17, coincided with the start of pheasant hunting season, a tradition Noem emphasized as part of her family's heritage. However, the post quickly attracted negative attention as critics revisited her controversial admission regarding her previous pet, Cricket, which she shot after it exhibited aggressive behavior.
In her memoir, "No Going Back," Noem detailed the incident involving Cricket, a 14-month-old dog that had attacked a neighbor's chickens and attempted to bite her. She described the difficult decision to take Cricket to a gravel pit and shoot her, citing the dog's untrainable nature and dangerous behavior. This revelation sparked outrage among animal lovers and raised questions about Noem's suitability for political office, particularly as she was considered a potential running mate for Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
Following the photo's release, social media users expressed their concerns for Foster's safety, with comments suggesting that Noem's history with Cricket raised alarms about her treatment of animals. One user remarked that Foster appeared to be "staring at the camera like he's on death row," while others urged her not to harm the new dog. The reactions reflect a broader unease regarding Noem's past actions and their implications for her public persona.
Cleared to File
Despite the backlash, Noem defended her decision to kill Cricket, arguing that such choices are sometimes necessary on a farm. She expressed a desire to be honest about her experiences rather than present a sanitized version of her life. In response to the criticism, she acknowledged the emotional weight of the incident but maintained that the law in South Dakota allows for dogs that pose a threat to livestock to be euthanized.
The controversy surrounding Noem's actions and her recent social media post underscores the ongoing scrutiny she faces as a public figure. As she continues to engage with her constituents and the broader public, the reactions to her decisions regarding animal welfare may have lasting effects on her political career.
