BMW i3 Touring Electric Wagon Spotted Ahead of 2027 Launch
The BMW i3 Touring, the brand's first electric wagon, has been spotted during testing, providing a closer look at its design ahead of its anticipated launch in 2027. The prototype was seen near the Nürburgring, and while it is camouflaged, the overall shape and features are becoming clearer. This model is part of BMW's Neue Klasse lineup, which aims to expand its electric vehicle offerings without the traditional SUV designation.
Internally referred to as the "NA1," the i3 Touring is expected to share many components with the i3 Sedan, including advancements in efficiency and range. The sedan can achieve up to 912 kilometers (567 miles) on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle, although the wagon may experience a slight reduction in range due to its increased weight and less aerodynamic design.
The exterior design features a longer roof and a redesigned tailgate, which enhances its practicality. Notably, the prototype lacks a separate rear-glass opening, a feature that has been a staple of the 3 Series Touring since 1999. This change suggests a shift in design philosophy, aligning more closely with the larger 5 Series Touring.
Innovative Interior Features on the Horizon
Inside, the i3 Touring is expected to adopt the same innovative features as the i3 Sedan, including a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a new operating system that simplifies the dashboard layout. The design aims to provide a modern and user-friendly experience, moving away from the traditional iDrive rotary knob.
Intelligence Reviewed
BMW confirmed the i3 Touring's development during the i3 Sedan's world premiere earlier this year, indicating that production will take place at the Munich plant. While the exact reveal date remains unannounced, the company is also considering a combustion-powered version of the 3 Series Touring, which would share some design elements but utilize different architectures for its powertrains.
The future of the Touring body style appears secure, even as the automotive industry increasingly favors SUVs. BMW is also expected to introduce an updated i5 Touring next year, further expanding its electric wagon offerings.
