Trump Administration Faces Backlash Over Subpoenas to Journalists
Jennifer Griffin, Fox News Chief National Security Correspondent, has voiced strong criticism of the Trump administration after reports emerged that several journalists from The New York Times were subpoenaed. These subpoenas are linked to the Times' reporting on security issues surrounding Air Force One, specifically regarding a jet donated by the Qatari government. Griffin expressed her concerns on social media, stating that the government's action to subpoena reporters for covering legitimate news should alarm every American. She highlighted the unsettling image of federal law enforcement agents appearing at the homes of journalists to deliver subpoenas.
The New York Times reported that President Donald Trump had replaced the Qatari-donated jet with an older model of Air Force One as a precautionary measure related to tensions with Iran. Trump suggested that he left the Qatari jet in the UK for public tours, while he flew on the older jet for nostalgia. However, during a press interaction, he raised concerns about potential threats to his safety, claiming he was at the top of Iran's assassination list.
The subpoenas require journalists to testify before a grand jury in the coming week. In some instances, federal agents have reportedly visited journalists' homes to serve these subpoenas. Griffin shared a statement from Times attorney David McCraw, who remarked that the sight of federal agents at the doorsteps of news reporters should disturb anyone who values the Constitution and the freedoms it guarantees for the press.
