OpenAI Engineer Charged with Espionage for Hidden Recording Device

OpenAI Engineer Charged with Espionage for Hidden Recording Device

Federal prosecutors have charged Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old engineer at OpenAI, with planting a hidden audio recording device in the company's San Francisco office. According to the authorities, Alfozan booked a one-way ticket to Saudi Arabia shortly after the device was discovered, which raised suspicions and led to his arrest on October 9, 2026. His flight was scheduled for October 12, giving investigators a narrow window to act.

The hidden device, described as being the size of a thumb, was equipped with a microphone and advanced encryption technology. Investigators reported that it was concealed within a roll of toilet paper and plugged into a television's USB port. The device was allegedly installed around September 28, 2026, and was discovered during a routine security sweep by OpenAI on September 30.

Following the discovery, OpenAI initiated an internal investigation and utilized its AI models to trace the device back to Alfozan. He had joined the company as an engineer in July 2025, meaning he had been employed there for just over a year when the incident occurred. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Alfozan near the area where the device was hidden multiple times prior to its discovery, and he was not authorized to access that part of the office.

Suspicious Travel Plans Uncovered

In addition to the hidden device, prosecutors highlighted Alfozan's travel plans as a significant factor in the case. He had reserved a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia, which further fueled suspicions about his intentions. OpenAI has since terminated Alfozan's employment, stating that no sensitive data or proprietary information was accessed or exfiltrated during the incident.

Approved for Dissemination

It is important to note that these are charges and not a conviction. Alfozan has not yet been found guilty, and the allegations will need to be substantiated in court. This case is being treated as a national security matter, with officials emphasizing the importance of safeguarding U.S. technological leadership in AI from potential foreign threats.

The FBI is continuing its investigation into the matter, and authorities have indicated a broader need for stronger security measures within leading AI organizations. As the investigation unfolds, further details regarding Alfozan's intentions and any potential accomplices may emerge through court filings and ongoing inquiries. Until then, the case remains focused on the hidden device, its unusual concealment, and the implications for national security.
