Lula's Campaign Accuses Meta of Interfering in Brazilian Elections
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's campaign has leveled serious accusations against Meta, alleging that the tech giant has suppressed his social media posts in an effort to interfere with the upcoming runoff election. Lula, who is vying for a fourth non-consecutive term in the election scheduled for October 25, is set to face Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
In a statement released by Lula's campaign, they reported several instances where content on platforms owned by Meta, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, was allegedly restricted. The campaign claimed that Meta had prevented Lula's profile from promoting posts on Instagram and that a specific post from his official account experienced a significant drop in view counts, which they argue affected its overall reach.
Additionally, the campaign noted that prior to the first round of voting on October 4, in which Flavio Bolsonaro secured the top position, profiles of Lula and other leftist leaders mysteriously vanished from Instagram's search function. This series of technical issues has raised concerns among Lula's supporters, who believe that Meta's actions may constitute an attempt to manipulate the Brazilian electoral process in favor of Bolsonaro.

In response to these allegations, Meta's Brazil office has firmly denied the claims, describing them as "simply false" and lacking factual support. The company stated that many of the technical issues mentioned were not exclusive to Brazil or specific accounts, suggesting that the problems were more widespread.
As the election approaches, the tension between Lula's campaign and Meta highlights the growing scrutiny of social media platforms and their influence on political processes. The outcome of this election could have significant implications for Brazil's political landscape, especially given the contentious history between Lula and the Bolsonaro family.
