Latvian Citizens Arrested for Trespassing at UK Military Intelligence Base
Counter-terrorism officers are investigating the arrest of two Latvian citizens who allegedly breached the perimeter fence of a significant military intelligence station in Cambridgeshire, England. The arrests occurred at RAF Molesworth in the early hours of Thursday morning, as confirmed by Counter Terror Policing in London.
The two men, both in their 30s and residing in Peterborough, were initially detained on suspicion of trespassing on a prohibited site and causing criminal damage. Subsequently, they faced additional charges under section 4 of the National Security Act 2023 for entering a prohibited place with intentions deemed prejudicial to the UK.
A spokesperson for the terrorism police indicated that, while there is currently no evidence linking the trespassing incident to a recent alleged Iranian attack plot against another American airbase in the UK, the investigation is still in its early stages. Authorities are maintaining an open mind regarding the motives behind the trespassing.
The alarm was raised at RAF Molesworth late Wednesday evening when a security patrol discovered an abandoned vehicle near the perimeter fence. This prompted an intensive search, which revealed a breach in the fence. The two individuals were located on the base around 2 a.m. and subsequently arrested.
Understanding RAF Molesworth's Strategic Role
RAF Molesworth serves as a military intelligence station rather than a traditional airbase, hosting the U.S. European Command Joint Intelligence Analytics Center and NATO's Intelligence Fusion Center. The latter aims to integrate intelligence networks among NATO member states, producing comprehensive operational and strategic intelligence.
In the UK, security at such bases is typically managed by British Ministry of Defence police outside the perimeter, while U.S. force protection units oversee security within the grounds. This division of responsibility has been particularly evident at RAF Fairford, where heightened security measures have been implemented in response to the alleged Iranian plot.

The recent arrests at RAF Molesworth add to the ongoing investigation into the Fairford plot, which reportedly involved a potential drone attack against U.S. forces. Despite the UK's robust counter-terrorism laws allowing for extended detention of suspects, all individuals arrested in connection with the Fairford incident have been released on bail, including a 22-year-old British national apprehended in Westminster.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are focused on understanding the motivations behind the trespassing incident and any possible connections to broader security threats. The situation remains fluid, with counter-terrorism police actively pursuing leads and gathering evidence to ensure the safety and security of military installations in the UK.
