2027 BMW M760 Prototype with V8 Engine Spotted Testing
The BMW 7 Series facelift is gearing up for the introduction of a V8 engine variant, with the M760 model confirmed for a 2027 launch. Recently, a prototype of this full-size luxury sedan was spotted testing, marking the first sighting of the vehicle in its V8 configuration. At first glance, the prototype may be mistaken for the M760e, as it shares similar design elements, including a quad exhaust and the M Sport Package Pro. However, a closer inspection reveals the absence of the charging port typically found on the M760e, indicating that this is a gasoline-powered model.
The prototype's license plate also suggests it is not an electrified version, as plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles often have specific identifiers. A small piece of camouflage on the trunk appears to be concealing the model designation, which is expected to drop the “i” from its gasoline models, likely branding it as the M760 xDrive.
BMW engineers have worked to ensure that the V8 engine complies with stringent EU emissions regulations, raising questions about its power output in comparison to the U.S. version. Historically, the V8 engine has been detuned for European models, as seen with the M5, which will see a reduction of 41 horsepower due to Euro 7 regulations. The previous M760i produced 536 horsepower from its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, and while the new M760's output remains unconfirmed, it is anticipated to be competitive.
The new M760 is unlikely to be less powerful than its predecessor, especially considering the M760e's output of 603 horsepower from its inline-six and electric motor. BMW has not disclosed specific details about the V8's performance, but it is confirmed that the model will feature a conventional V8 engine, ruling out a complex plug-in hybrid setup similar to the M5. However, a mild-hybrid system may be included, as the 48-volt technology was standard in the previous generation.
While enthusiasts may hope for a full M7 variant, sources indicate that this will not materialize. Instead, the BMW ALPINA sub-brand is set to introduce its own version of the V8-powered 7 Series next year, alongside an armored Protection model. The anticipation surrounding the M760 and its performance capabilities continues to build as BMW prepares for its official launch.
