Royal Navy Member Charged with Espionage Appears in Court
A serving member of the Royal Navy, Teddy Young, is set to appear in a London court on Thursday to face serious charges of espionage for an undisclosed foreign power. The 24-year-old has been charged with two offenses under the National Security Act, which include preparing to disclose protected information between November 2024 and May 2025. During this same timeframe, Young is accused of obtaining, copying, recording, or retaining protected information for the benefit of a foreign entity.
Young has been in police custody since his arrest on Tuesday at his home in Bedfordshire, located north of London. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrate’s Court in central London. The charges against him have prompted significant concern, as highlighted by Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads counter-terrorism policing in London. Flanagan stated that these are very serious allegations against a member of the armed forces and emphasized the close collaboration with the Ministry of Defense to address any potential risks associated with the case.
The police have clarified that the charges against Young are not related to a recent security alert at RAF Fairford, a British air base that has been involved in operations against Iran. This alert was triggered by the discovery of three suspicious vans near the base on September 27, leading to the arrest of seven individuals.
Cleared for Release
Young had previously been arrested on May 21, 2025, and was released on bail while further investigations were conducted. Following that arrest, his security clearance was suspended, and he was removed from his duties within the Royal Navy. The Navy has acknowledged the arrest but stated that it would be inappropriate to comment further while legal proceedings are ongoing.
