Former German Intelligence Chief August Hanning Arrested for Espionage
August Hanning, the former chief of Germany's intelligence agency, the BND, has been arrested on serious charges of espionage and treason, as announced by the country's federal prosecutor's office. Hanning, who led the BND from December 1998 until November 2005, is now facing allegations that he misused his position to acquire sensitive state secrets from a former aide, identified by authorities as Manfred D.
The accusations suggest that Hanning, now 80 years old, maintained a close relationship with Manfred D., who served as his chief of staff during his tenure and continued to work with subsequent BND leaders. Reports indicate that since 2010, Hanning has allegedly been purchasing classified documents from Manfred D. that were intended for BND leadership, with the transactions reportedly continuing until at least June 2022. Prosecutors claim that nearly 2,000 internal documents, many of which were classified, were exchanged during this period.
In one notable instance, Hanning is accused of utilizing BND materials to create an analytical report for an employee of a foreign intelligence service. However, the federal prosecutor's office has not disclosed the identity of the foreign country involved, nor have they confirmed whether the report was ultimately delivered.
Further Allegations of Foreign Collaboration
Additionally, Hanning is alleged to have engaged with another unnamed foreign intelligence service, again based on materials he received from Manfred D. The charges against both men were made public following their arrests and subsequent searches of their residences. Evidence collected during a search of Hanning's home in Hamburg was reportedly pivotal in building the case against him.

The investigation into Hanning's activities is linked to a broader inquiry involving businesswoman Christina Block, who is embroiled in a high-profile custody dispute and is currently facing trial on kidnapping charges. Block, who is connected to the Block House restaurant group, allegedly hired Hanning's security firm, System 360, in relation to her custody case, which has raised further questions about Hanning's professional conduct post-retirement.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Hanning remains under investigation for his alleged involvement in this complex web of espionage and treason, while the trial concerning Block and her associates continues to develop.
