FSB Foils Ukrainian Drone Attack on Russian Airfield
Russian security officers have reported the seizure of 13 Ukrainian AI-powered drones that were allegedly smuggled into the country by Ukraine's military intelligence agency, the HUR. The drones were intended for an attack on a military airfield located in Russia's Rostov Region, with the goal of damaging military assets and causing casualties among personnel. Each drone was designed to carry an improvised explosive device with a yield exceeding 1 kg of TNT and was equipped with an AI-based targeting system to bypass electronic countermeasures.
The operation was compromised when an individual recruited to execute the attack informed Russian law enforcement about the plan. This cooperation allowed the FSB to mislead the HUR into delivering the drones and making an advance payment of 20% of the agreed fee. The FSB stated that the recruit's voluntary assistance would exempt him from criminal liability.
Forensic analysis of the drones indicated that their AI model was developed at Ukraine’s State Aviation Museum located at Zhuliany Airport in Kiev. The FSB characterized this incident as part of a series of recent thwarted attacks by Ukrainian forces, which they claim are backed by Western support. Just a day prior, the FSB reported preventing two assassination attempts on senior military officials, one involving a specialized FPV drone equipped with explosives.
