Former German Spy Chief Arrested on Espionage Charges
August Hanning, who served as the head of Germany's Federal Intelligence Service (BND) from 1998 to 2005, has been arrested on suspicion of espionage and treason. The German Federal Prosecutor's Office has stated that Hanning is accused of obtaining classified information for a foreign power. Following his tenure at the BND, Hanning worked as a private consultant.
Prosecutors allege that Hanning utilized classified intelligence to prepare an analysis for a foreign intelligence service and maintained contact with another foreign spying service. However, the specific foreign powers involved have not been disclosed by investigators.
In connection with Hanning's case, police also arrested a former BND employee identified as Mandred D. He is accused of passing approximately 2,000 classified documents to Hanning in exchange for money. Mandred D, who was Hanning's bureau chief and remained with the BND until this year, faces charges of aiding and abetting attempted treason and treasonous espionage.
Reports indicate that Hanning was arrested at his home in Nordwalde near Münster, while Mandred D was apprehended in Bavaria. Hanning is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, while Mandred D will face a judge on Tuesday.
Details of Information Exchange Uncovered
According to prosecutors, Mandred D used his position to access highly confidential information, which he then provided to Hanning for remuneration. The findings suggest that over the years, he supplied Hanning with around 2,000 documents, many of which were intended for internal use by the BND.
Prosecutors noted that on one occasion, Hanning used classified intelligence to draft an analysis for an officer of a foreign intelligence service, although it remains unclear if the material reached its intended recipient. Additionally, Hanning is accused of being in close contact with a representative of another foreign intelligence service, to whom he allegedly passed political information based on material provided by Mandred D over several years.
Clearance Granted
The investigation into Hanning's possession of intelligence documents reportedly surfaced during a separate case involving German steakhouse heiress Christina Block, who has been accused of orchestrating the kidnapping of her children amid a custody dispute. Investigators allege that Hanning was involved in an earlier attempted kidnapping of the children, which he denies.
State criminal police officers reportedly discovered an electronic data storage device containing sensitive information, including recent BND documents. This incident is not the first controversy for the BND; a high-ranking intelligence officer was charged with treason in 2023 for allegedly leaking state secrets to Russia. The officer, Carsten L, is accused of sharing intelligence related to the war in Ukraine and the Wagner mercenary group, receiving approximately €400,000 in return. His trial is currently ongoing.
