DHS Report Reveals Millions of Visa Overstays Allowed Under Biden Administration
A recent report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General, Joseph Cuffari, reveals that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under President Joe Biden knowingly allowed millions of illegal aliens who overstayed their visas to remain in the United States. These individuals were classified as "non-priority" aliens, raising concerns about national security and public safety.
From 2021 to 2024, ICE received over 3.1 million leads regarding visa overstays, with approximately 104,000 classified as potential threats to national security or public safety. Alarmingly, fewer than 500 of these leads were investigated, resulting in just eight arrests of individuals who overstayed their visas.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized the Biden administration's approach, stating that the level of negligence in immigration enforcement is both staggering and infuriating. The report highlights a directive issued by the Biden administration in September 2021, which instructed ICE agents to focus only on visa overstay leads considered "Priority 1." This directive effectively left millions of cases unaddressed, allowing many individuals to continue residing in the U.S. without scrutiny.
Ineffectiveness of ICE Investigations Revealed
Out of nearly 1,800 leads deemed Priority 1, only 84 were investigated, leading to a mere two arrests. The report indicates that ICE faced challenges in verifying addresses and locating individuals who overstayed their visas, compounded by a lack of resources to pursue all leads.
Cleared for Release
The latest data from DHS shows that nearly half a million foreign nationals overstayed their visas and remained in the U.S. in Fiscal Year 2024. Mullin emphasized that unlike the current administration, the previous administration prioritized the safety of American citizens and aimed to remove illegal aliens to enhance national security.
The findings of this report raise critical questions about the effectiveness of current immigration policies and the implications for national security. As the Biden administration continues to face scrutiny over its immigration enforcement strategies, the need for a reassessment of priorities and resources becomes increasingly evident.
