China Issues Warning on Crypto's Role in Espionage as Singapore's Market Expands

China Issues Warning on Crypto's Role in Espionage as Singapore's Market Expands

China's Ministry of State Security has escalated its rhetoric regarding the risks posed by cryptocurrencies, underscoring their involvement in criminal activities and asserting that transactions are not as anonymous as users might think. In a recent social media post, the ministry highlighted that cryptocurrencies facilitate money laundering and cyberattacks, serving as tools for espionage. The MSS specifically noted that crypto is often utilized by "overseas anti-China hostile forces" to undermine financial stability and threaten national security. The message was clear: authorities are monitoring blockchain transactions closely.

This warning appears to target foreign spies who may mistakenly believe they can conduct transactions without detection. The ministry's statement, "We’re watching the blockchain," serves as a reminder that while cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum may offer some level of privacy, others such as Monero or Zcash can provide complete anonymity if used correctly. China has a history of banning cryptocurrencies, having implemented a comprehensive ban on exchanges in 2017 and subsequently prohibiting mining in 2021.

In contrast, Singapore's crypto economy has experienced significant growth, with activity increasing by 55.4% to reach $284 billion in the year ending June 2026. This growth has allowed Singapore to reclaim its status as the largest crypto economy in Central and Southeast Asia and Oceania, according to Chainalysis. Much of this increase is attributed to institutional platform activity, which surged by 94% to $60 billion, primarily driven by a few key market makers and over-the-counter trading firms. Chainalysis noted that the broader crypto economy in the region contracted by 6.8% during the same period.

South Korea's Regulatory Developments in Crypto

The Financial Services Commission of South Korea is also making strides in the crypto space, considering the legalization of market makers for digital assets. This follows a recent incident where a stablecoin linked to the Japanese yen traded at a significantly inflated price on a major South Korean exchange. The commission is exploring the introduction of market-making systems to enhance the efficiency and stability of the digital asset market, as current regulations do not exempt market-making from market manipulation provisions.

In other developments, the U.S. payments firm MoonPay has established a subsidiary in South Korea to collaborate with local financial institutions on remittances and digital asset distribution, although it is still awaiting necessary approvals. Additionally, Binance Pay is set to enable overseas users in Japan to spend various cryptocurrencies at PayPay-supported merchants, marking a significant step in crypto payment integration in the region.

Hong Kong regulators have also taken steps to enhance cooperation on financial reporting and audits of licensed crypto firms, establishing a framework for information sharing and coordinated inspections. Meanwhile, HSBC is preparing to launch its new Hong Kong dollar-based stablecoin, RedCoin, starting with person-to-person and merchant payments, followed by corporate applications. An educational campaign is also in the works to protect the public from potential scams related to digital currencies.
