Lapid and Official Clash Over Security Briefing After Plane Incident
A dispute erupted between Opposition Leader Yair Lapid and a political official following an incident aboard a Flydubai flight and the security briefing Lapid received from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Lapid sought to clarify that during his meeting with Netanyahu, he was not informed of any incident resembling what occurred on the flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. He emphasized, "To be clear: Nothing even remotely resembling this morning’s plane incident came up in the security briefing with the Prime Minister last night. Nothing similar, nothing reminiscent of it, not even a hint." Lapid criticized those attempting to connect the two events, stating that they were playing politics at the expense of Israel’s security.
In response, a political official noted that while Lapid had not been briefed about the plane incident itself, he had received a warning regarding an increase in threats abroad. The official stated, "Contrary to Lapid’s remarks, the Military Secretariat briefed him last night on a significant increase in terrorist activity abroad - on a scale not seen in years." This dispute follows a security briefing that lasted approximately half an hour, during which Netanyahu warned that Israel had indications of potential attacks ahead of the elections.
Lapid criticized the way the warning was presented to the public, asserting that security threats must be handled professionally. He remarked, "Security threats are something that must be handled professionally and responsibly. Israel’s security and IDF bases are not backdrops for campaign videos." He further stated that briefings about threats should come from professionals, not politicians in the midst of an election campaign.

The incident aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with over 150 Israelis on board, raised serious concerns. Reports indicate that the co-pilot, an Omani citizen, stabbed the captain, leading to speculation about a terrorist attack rather than a mental health issue. Passengers and crew managed to subdue the attacker, averting what could have been a catastrophic disaster. A distress code signaling unlawful interference was activated, prompting the Israeli Air Force to scramble fighter jets and senior security officials to hold emergency consultations.
The plane ultimately landed in Saudi Arabia, where Israeli forces were present to assist. The Israeli passengers are currently being questioned before their return to Israel.
