Netanyahu Warns of Potential Attacks Ahead of Elections, Lapid Seeks Briefing
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he will hold a security consultation with defense leaders tonight, followed by a meeting with opposition leader Yair Lapid at 11:30 PM for a security update. This comes after Netanyahu's remarks during a visit to the Tel Nof Air Force Base, where he stated there are indications that Israel's enemies may attempt to attack ahead of the elections.
Netanyahu emphasized the seriousness of the situation, saying, "We have indications that, ahead of the elections, our enemies will try to attack us." He conveyed a strong message from the Air Force base, asserting, "Don’t mess with us, not now and not ever. Our long arm will reach you anywhere and at any time."
In light of these comments, Lapid reached out to the Prime Minister's Office, requesting an urgent security briefing. His statement highlighted the need to ascertain whether the threats are credible and how the Prime Minister intends to ensure that the elections proceed without disruption.
Opposition Demands Clarity on Security Threats
The Yashar! party, led by Gadi Eisenkot, also reacted to Netanyahu's statements, calling for a briefing for Lapid. They stressed that if the security threats are genuine, it is crucial for the opposition leader to be informed to confirm that the situation is not being politicized for electoral gain. The party stated, "It is absolutely forbidden to mix Israel’s security with the election campaign - even in appearance."
Case Closed
The Prime Minister’s Office responded by noting that Netanyahu regularly meets with Lapid for security briefings, with their last meeting occurring approximately two weeks ago. They confirmed that, given the recent developments, Netanyahu has instructed his military secretary to provide Lapid with a briefing today on the latest security updates.
During his visit to the Air Force base, Netanyahu also discussed ongoing military operations across various fronts, stating, "We are operating constantly on all fronts." He acknowledged the achievements of the Israeli military while also addressing the pressures the country faces to withdraw from certain positions. Netanyahu asserted his commitment to maintaining Israel's security and not allowing any concessions that could undermine the efforts of the military.
