First Look at John le Carré’s ‘A Legacy of Spies’ Adaptation
The BBC and MGM+ have released the first images from the highly anticipated eight-part series adaptation of John le Carré’s ‘A Legacy of Spies’. This adaptation offers a fresh perspective on the iconic character George Smiley, portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen, and features Charlie Hunnam as British intelligence officer Alec Leamas.
The images coincide with the completion of production in the Czech Republic, where the series was filmed. ‘A Legacy of Spies’ serves as both a prequel and sequel to le Carré’s renowned novels, particularly ‘The Spy Who Came In From The Cold’ and ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’. This new adaptation primarily focuses on ‘The Spy Who Came In From The Cold’ while incorporating elements from ‘A Legacy of Spies’ and other related works.
Set against the backdrop of the Berlin Wall, the narrative begins with Leamas witnessing the death of his last agent at the hands of East German sentries. Faced with the prospect of retirement or a mundane desk job, he is presented with a unique opportunity for revenge by Control, played by Hugh Laurie. Leamas is tasked with infiltrating the East German Intelligence Service, using his guise as a disgruntled former agent to ensnare Hans-Dieter Mundt, the deputy director of the service.
