Japan Partners with Meghalaya to Boost Agriculture and Tourism
Japan has become a key partner in Meghalaya's development efforts, with cooperation extending across agriculture, healthcare, tourism, human resource development, and environmental conservation. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma highlighted this partnership during his web broadcast, 'Live with Conrad.' He noted that the collaboration has already led to several initiatives, including mushroom production, local sake-brewing trials, and the introduction of a premium Japanese strawberry variety in the state.
The government has successfully imported and begun nurturing saplings of the 'Tochiotome' variety, known for its large size, rich flavor, and high sweetness. These saplings are currently being cultivated under strict protocols at local centers and will soon be distributed to farmers throughout Meghalaya. Sangma explained that this initiative is a follow-up to an official visit to Japan, where a Meghalaya delegation toured strawberry farms and studied advanced cultivation techniques.
This collaboration involves the Japanese government, the Indian government, and the Meghalaya government, aimed at bringing these saplings from Japan to Meghalaya. A technical expert associated with the project emphasized that the Tochiotome variety offers superior sweetness and quality compared to standard varieties. The state agriculture department believes this initiative could significantly improve fruit quality, increase farmer incomes, and position Meghalaya as a hub for high-value horticulture in the Northeast region.
Cleared for Release
Sangma expressed optimism about the technology exchange and partnership with developed nations like Japan, stating that it will undoubtedly benefit the state and its farmers in the future.
