UK to Provide Military Air-to-Air Refueling Support to Saudi Arabia
Britain has confirmed its decision to provide military support to Saudi Arabia in response to increasing attacks from Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis. This support, aimed at enhancing Saudi Arabia's national security, was announced by a UK defense minister on September 22. A British tanker plane will be deployed to offer defensive air-to-air refueling for Saudi warplanes, assisting the country in its efforts to defend against Houthi strikes.
The announcement follows a request from Saudi Arabia for military assistance as the Houthis have intensified their drone and missile attacks in recent weeks, particularly targeting the Red Sea coast. Notably, a Houthi attack on Riyadh on September 19 marked a significant escalation, being the first strike on the Saudi capital in years.
UK Defense Minister Luke Pollard emphasized that this military support is driven by national security considerations, stating, "We’re doing it for national security reasons in support of our own national security." He reassured that the assistance would comply with international humanitarian law. The deployment of the RAF Voyager tanker, typically stationed at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, is expected to begin within days and will be time-limited, potentially lasting for several weeks.
