DIA Accredits Defence Advisers from UK, Japan, Italy, Ghana, and Mali
The Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) has officially accredited Defence Advisers and Defence Attachés from the United Kingdom, Japan, Italy, Ghana, and the Republic of Mali. This accreditation ceremony, held in Abuja, highlighted the importance of adhering to Nigeria's diplomatic and security protocols while fulfilling their official responsibilities. Lt.-Gen. Emmanuel Akomaye Undiandeye, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, addressed the diplomats, urging them to follow established guidelines in their interactions with Nigerian government institutions.
The ceremony serves as a formal authorization for the Defence Advisers and Attachés to conduct their duties within Nigeria. Undiandeye expressed his honor in witnessing this significant event, which marks an important milestone in the professional lives of the accredited diplomats. He reiterated the necessity of strict adherence to guidelines and due process in all engagements, particularly with ministries, departments, and agencies of the Nigerian government.
Undiandeye also assured the diplomats of their safety during official travels, stating that adequate security arrangements would be made if the DIA is notified in advance. He emphasized that notifying the agency allows for necessary logistical support throughout their movements. The diplomats will receive accreditation guidelines detailing the procedures governing their operations and interactions in Nigeria.
Beyond their diplomatic roles, Undiandeye encouraged the diplomats to view their assignments as opportunities to experience Nigeria's rich cultural diversity and hospitality. He noted that their presence is crucial for promoting defence cooperation, military training, exchange programs, and broader security collaboration between Nigeria and their respective countries.
Maj.-Gen. Ojogbane Adegbe, the Director of Foreign Liaison at the DIA, explained that the ceremony marks the final stage of the accreditation process. Although the officers had engaged in some official activities prior to accreditation, the ceremony grants them full authority to perform their responsibilities in accordance with established procedures. Adegbe assured the diplomats of the agency's support but reminded them of the importance of complying with accreditation requirements.
He stressed that Defence Advisers and Attachés must notify the DIA before traveling outside Abuja or Nigeria and obtain necessary clearances for such trips. Adegbe also highlighted the need for prior approval before visiting any military institution or government establishment, citing past instances where unauthorized visits occurred. He emphasized that strict compliance with these procedures would prevent delays or complications at security checkpoints and ensure that all official engagements are conducted properly.
