US Treasury Imposes Sanctions on Iranian Crypto Exchange BitBank

US Treasury Imposes Sanctions on Iranian Crypto Exchange BitBank

The US Treasury has announced sanctions against BitBank, an Iranian cryptocurrency exchange, claiming it processed payments related to safe passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. This action, revealed on Thursday, is part of the US government's ongoing campaign against financial activities that undermine sanctions imposed on Iran.

BitBank has been identified as a significant player in a sanctions-evasion network orchestrated by Babak Zanjani, a financier previously sanctioned for his involvement in embezzlement. The Treasury alleges that BitBank facilitated the transfer of payments to Iran’s Hormuz Safe Marine Services Authority, further entrenching Zanjani's influence in the digital asset space.

The sanctions against BitBank are part of a larger initiative targeting Zanjani's operations, which include various entities and individuals linked to his financial activities. In July, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned multiple individuals and entities associated with Zanjani, aiming to dismantle his extensive sanctions-evasion network, which includes the Dot One conglomerate and the infrastructure supporting his Zedcex and Zedxion exchanges.

Alongside BitBank, the Treasury's latest sanctions also affect Pishtaz Simorgh Electronic Trade Company, the software developer behind the exchange, and three associates of Zanjani. These designations are part of Operation Economic Outcast, which seeks to disrupt Iran's financial and logistical networks globally.

The US government has characterized Zanjani's businesses as both legitimate commercial ventures and covert operations that facilitate sanctions evasion and support for Iranian state-linked entities. The ongoing sanctions are intended to curb these activities and reinforce compliance among international financial platforms.
