US Military Strikes Iranian Boats to Protect Naval Drone
The US military has confirmed that it conducted strikes against two boats belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which were allegedly attempting to seize an American naval drone. Reports from Iranian media indicated that several fishermen went missing following the US attack near the southern port city of Kargan and close to Larak Island.
The Pentagon's account of the incident was first reported by Axios, with US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins affirming the attempted seizure. He stated that the unmanned surface vessel involved remains under US operational control. The drone in question has been identified as an 8-meter Saildrone, a type of autonomous craft produced by California-based Saildrone, which features a distinctive sail-like structure equipped with solar panels and various instruments.
The US Navy has utilized Saildrone products for intelligence gathering in the Middle East since at least 2021. In 2022, the US accused Iran of stealing some of these drones. Earlier this month, the IRGC claimed to have destroyed a Saildrone Explorer and released footage showing the drone ablaze. Furthermore, the IRGC published footage of what it described as a modern unmanned submarine operated by the US Navy that had been seized by Iran. CENTCOM clarified that the submersible drone was an older model and did not carry sensitive equipment.

Iran has a history of reverse-engineering American military technology to enhance its own capabilities. Notably, Iran's Shahed 171 Simorgh and Shahed Saeqeh drones bear resemblance to the US RQ-170, which Iran captured in 2011 after it inadvertently crossed into Iranian airspace during a surveillance mission.
The ongoing tensions between the US and Iran have significantly impacted global energy markets, as both nations exert pressure on each other through restrictions on oil exports from the Persian Gulf. This incident underscores the complex and often confrontational relationship between the two countries, particularly in the realm of military technology and intelligence operations.
