John Brennan Subpoenaed in Investigation of Alleged Conspiracy Against Trump
Former CIA Director John Brennan has been subpoenaed to testify next month before a Florida grand jury as part of a Justice Department investigation. This inquiry is focused on whether former law enforcement and intelligence officials conspired against President Donald Trump, according to a statement from one of Brennan's lawyers.
Ken Wainstein, Brennan's attorney, revealed in a court filing that the subpoena was issued last Thursday, requiring Brennan to appear on October 15 in Fort Pierce, Florida. The investigation is described as a "far-reaching" criminal probe that examines a loosely defined theory suggesting that government officials who have investigated Trump over the years, including inquiries into Russian election interference in 2016 and the retention of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate, conspired to undermine his civil rights.
The subpoena to Brennan is part of a series of subpoenas issued in recent weeks. Wainstein noted that a prosecutor informed him that Brennan remains a target in a separate investigation based in Washington, which is looking into whether he lied to Congress in 2023. Brennan and his legal team have consistently denied these allegations. Earlier subpoenas related to this false statements investigation were issued in the spring but were later withdrawn in favor of voluntary interviews.
Subpoena Timing Amid Leadership Changes
The timing of the subpoena coincides with the resignation of Joe diGenova, the prosecutor who had been leading the so-called "grand conspiracy" investigation. His resignation was reportedly due to dissatisfaction from the Justice Department and the White House regarding the pace and management of the investigation. As of now, the Justice Department has not announced a replacement for diGenova.
Cleared for Release
Wainstein also mentioned that he spoke with Kurt Olsen, a member of the investigative team, who previously attempted to persuade the Justice Department to support Trump's unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him.
The subpoena was disclosed just hours before a court hearing in Washington regarding a lawsuit filed by Brennan. In this lawsuit, he seeks a court order to preserve all records from the investigations targeting him, asserting that these documents are crucial for challenging any potential indictment on the grounds of vindictive prosecution.
