Russian Drone Strike Near Ukraine-Poland Border Targets Train
A Russian drone struck a train near the Ukraine-Poland border on Sunday, just after a diplomatic train carrying high-profile officials, including former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, had passed through. According to Ukraine’s state rail operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, the diplomatic train had left the Yahodyn station ahead of schedule, likely to avoid the attack.
Ukrzaliznytsia indicated that the drone's intended target was likely the diplomatic train, which had departed just minutes before the strike. Bildt shared a video of the attack on social media, noting that while their train was evacuated as the drone approached, no one was harmed. He praised the safety systems in place that allowed for the timely evacuation.
The officials were returning from the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv, which gathers leaders and experts from various sectors to discuss security and political issues. Another train, carrying former CIA Director David Petraeus, was still at the Yahodyn station when the drone struck, but there were no immediate reports of casualties from either train.
Case Closed
Ukrzaliznytsia has stated that it continuously adjusts train schedules to mitigate the risk of such attacks. Johnson expressed his disbelief over the incident, questioning the rationale behind targeting a stationary Ukrainian train near the Polish border. He emphasized that this attack exemplifies the random and senseless violence that Ukrainians face daily, even affecting civilian railways.
Earlier on the same day, a Russian drone also targeted a truck near the border, prompting the temporary closure of the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing. This incident underscores the ongoing conflict and the threats posed to civilian infrastructure in the region.
