Daring Rescue of US Airman Shot Down Over Iran

Daring Rescue of US Airman Shot Down Over Iran

Newly released footage reveals the dramatic rescue of 'Bravo,' one of two US Air Force crew members whose aircraft was shot down over Iran in April. The video shows personnel from the US Joint Special Operations Command during the mission to locate and rescue him after he survived alone for two days, severely wounded, deep inside enemy territory.

'Bravo,' the weapons systems officer aboard an F-15E Strike Eagle, was injured when the aircraft was brought down over southwestern Iran, in the Isfahan area. An Iranian missile that struck the aircraft also damaged his parachute equipment, causing him to descend toward the ground at an exceptionally high speed. According to expert estimates, 'Bravo' struck the ground at a speed of between 110 and 160 kilometers per hour. He survived the impact but suffered a spinal fracture, fractures to his shoulder and arm, and a sprained ankle.

Despite his condition and without food or water, the officer began moving through the terrain and climbing toward a mountain ridge reaching an elevation of approximately 2,100 meters in an attempt to find shelter. He expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal, stating, "I believe that it's a testament to God's provision in my life to bring me through that moment in a way that didn't prevent injuries, but prevented any catastrophic injuries that would have affected my ability to survive."

The two crew members who were forced to eject from the aircraft landed approximately five miles apart. The pilot, given the callsign 'Alpha,' was located and rescued within about six hours in a daylight operation involving 21 aircraft under heavy fire. The rescue of 'Bravo,' however, was delayed by a day due to operational considerations.

Technological Advances Aid in Rescue Operation

The breakthrough came after classified CIA technology helped pinpoint his exact location, alongside the activation of his personal locator beacon. Once his location was confirmed, an extensive rescue force was dispatched, involving hundreds of troops and dozens of fighter jets and helicopters. As part of the operation, two transport aircraft carrying approximately 92 special forces commandos landed on Iranian soil, marking the first US ground operation in the country in approximately 46 years.

Cleared to File

The rescue itself was conducted under fire, with US commandos engaging members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basij forces, while fighter aircraft worked to isolate the operational area and prevent Iranian reinforcements from reaching the scene. During the operation, two US helicopters were hit by anti-aircraft fire, while an A-10 support aircraft crashed in Kuwait.

Even after 'Bravo' was rescued, the American force encountered another complication when the wheels of the two transport aircraft became stuck in the sand on the improvised landing strip, preventing them from taking off. A secretive US Air Force unit was called in to assist, and three additional aircraft were dispatched to evacuate the troops and the rescued officer. The two aircraft left behind were subsequently destroyed in an airstrike on the orders of mission commanders to prevent their technology from falling into Iranian hands.
