CNN Analyst Critiques Kushner and Witkoff's Comments on Ukraine Conflict
CNN national security analyst Alex Plitsas expressed strong disapproval of U.S. special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff during a segment on "The Lead." He described their comments regarding the war in Ukraine as "abhorrent" and embarrassing for the United States. Plitsas's remarks followed a weekend of peace negotiations in Moscow and Kyiv, where Kushner suggested that a resolution could lead to a "win-win" scenario for both nations, allowing Putin to fulfill his "aspirations."
Plitsas criticized this notion, stating, "The sound bites that came out of Kyiv and Moscow from this trip were nothing short of embarrassing for the United States and were absolutely abhorrent." He highlighted the atrocities committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, including war crimes, and argued that accommodating Putin's desires is unacceptable.
While acknowledging that peace negotiations might involve some territorial concessions, Plitsas stressed the importance of the language used in these discussions. He took issue with Witkoff's comments during a meeting in the Kremlin, where he praised Putin for the "incredible stories" they would have to share in retirement.
Kushner's remarks included references to Putin's "objectives" and "aspirations" that could be realized once the conflict concludes. Plitsas conveyed his disgust at these statements, marking a rare instance where he felt compelled to use such strong language.
The visit by Kushner and Witkoff to Ukraine was part of a renewed diplomatic effort, occurring four and a half years after Russia's initial invasion. However, following their departure, Russia resumed airstrikes, resulting in casualties. Plitsas noted that this behavior reflects Putin's belief that he can still achieve victory in the war, despite warnings from U.S. intelligence officials.
He concluded by stating that the envoys' comments send a troubling message about U.S. resolve and the perception of weakness in the face of Russian aggression.
