UK Launches New Space Strategy to Enhance National Security and Defense

The UK government has launched a new space strategy that aims to bolster national security and defense capabilities while driving economic growth. Announced on September 8, the strategy is backed by a record investment of £7.8 billion until 2030, consolidating the government's space activities under a unified plan.

This strategy recognizes the growing importance of space as a domain for national security. It includes initiatives to enhance Space Domain Awareness, which involves monitoring satellites, rockets, and space debris. Key projects include £149 million allocated to the European Space Agency's Vigil mission and £85 million for the National Space Operations Centre. These investments will enable the UK to provide earlier warnings of potential satellite collisions and other threats, thereby protecting essential services such as power and communications.

An additional £880 million will be directed towards improving the UK's space control and intelligence capabilities, which are vital for tracking military activities and safeguarding satellites from potential attacks. This funding will enhance the UK's ability to respond swiftly to threats, ensuring the protection of both terrestrial and space assets.

Moreover, £2.8 billion will be invested in enhancing connectivity through programs like Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit and SKYNET, which are crucial for maintaining communication for the Armed Forces globally. These advancements are expected to benefit everyday life by providing faster and more reliable connectivity, particularly in rural areas.

The strategy aims to grow the UK space sector, which is currently valued at £18.6 billion and supports over 55,000 skilled jobs. It positions the UK as a leader in the global space industry, with initiatives ranging from satellite services to ambitious missions like the UK-built Rosalind Franklin Mars Rover.

Business, Innovation, Science and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds emphasized that as space becomes a new frontier for economic and military competition, this strategy will enhance the UK's ability to launch satellites and detect threats, while also creating skilled jobs and improving connectivity.

Defence Secretary Wes Streeting highlighted the necessity of protecting UK and allied space assets as threats in orbit become more sophisticated. The strategy is designed to ensure that the UK can maintain its freedom of action in space and respond effectively to emerging challenges.

The strategy also includes a £40 million investment to support innovative technologies for in-orbit servicing and manufacturing, which will help maintain satellites and clear space debris. This initiative aims to foster the development of new products that can be created in the unique environment of space, contributing to advancements in various fields, including pharmaceuticals.

For the first time, the government will adopt a unified approach to procuring and developing space technology, starting with satellite communications. This approach is expected to strengthen UK supply chains and support skilled jobs while delivering better value for taxpayers.

The new strategy replaces the previous National Space Strategy from 2021 and is integral to the Modern Industrial Strategy, which aims to promote reindustrialization and sustainable growth across the UK. The government is also reforming space regulations to facilitate investment in cutting-edge missions and ensure responsible operations in space.

Industry leaders have welcomed the new strategy, expressing optimism about its potential to enhance collaboration and drive growth in the UK space sector. The strategy outlines a comprehensive plan to develop capabilities and deliver outcomes across four priority subsectors, ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of space innovation and security.
