US Envoys Witkoff and Kushner Visit Ukraine for Peace Talks
US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner made their first official visit to Ukraine on Sunday as part of renewed efforts to achieve peace with Russia. The envoys arrived in Kyiv by train from Poland, as Ukraine's airspace remains closed due to ongoing conflict. Their arrival followed a three-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day, during which Putin declared a three-day ceasefire to ensure the safety of the US officials.
Ahead of the visit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took to social media to express Kyiv's readiness for a constructive dialogue with the US envoys. He emphasized the urgency of bringing the war to an end, stating, "Peace is needed. Security guarantees are needed. A just and sustainable postwar peace is needed. Our proposals are prepared."
According to reports from Reuters, national security advisors from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany were also in Kyiv for discussions with the US envoys, indicating a collaborative international effort to address the situation in Ukraine.
Despite previous momentum from US President Donald Trump to resolve the four-and-a-half-year conflict, recent talks with Putin have not yielded significant results. Following the meeting on Saturday, no announcements were made regarding any breakthroughs.
Putin's foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, described the Moscow discussions as constructive and frank, though he did not disclose specific outcomes. The talks reportedly also covered economic matters and potential large-scale projects between Russia and the US.
Negotiators have faced challenges in reconciling key issues, particularly concerning the future of the industrial Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. For Ukraine, securing hard guarantees from its European allies and Washington is crucial to deter further Russian aggression.
Kyrylo Budanov, Zelenskyy's chief of staff, recently indicated that he does not expect the fighting to cease before spring 2027 and anticipates further Russian air strikes on Ukraine this winter. The conflict has intensified in recent months, with Putin aiming for complete control over Donbas and Russian drones targeting the Ukrainian capital.
In response, Ukraine has intensified its drone attacks on Russia's energy infrastructure and has targeted online retailers within Russia to bring the war's impact closer to the Russian public.
