NSA and Army Launch QuantumEAGLe Initiative to Boost Quantum Computing
The National Security Agency (NSA) and the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) have announced the launch of the Quantum Ecosystem Advancement, Growth & Leadership (QuantumEAGLe) initiative. This program, introduced on June 30, 2026, aims to accelerate the U.S. quantum computing ecosystem and reinforce the nation's leadership in quantum technology, in alignment with the President’s Quantum Executive Order.
QuantumEAGLe will focus on five key areas: fostering collaboration with the quantum industry to align research with commercial needs, developing commercial roadmaps to tackle industry challenges, enhancing the supply chain for quantum components, discovering novel algorithms for quantum advantage, and supporting foundational research to address fundamental challenges in qubit performance and system characterization.
Liji Samuel, NSA chief of the Laboratory for Physical Sciences, highlighted that QuantumEAGLe builds on decades of foundational research in Quantum Information Science and represents a significant expansion of the NSA's quantum computing efforts. Dr. Purush Iyer, Acting Director of ARO, emphasized that the initiative combines the strengths of both organizations to accelerate progress toward fault-tolerant quantum computing, ensuring the U.S. remains at the forefront of this critical technology.
Dr. Michael Metcalfe, NSA chief of Quantum Information Science, noted that the initiative aims to enhance the supply chain, develop advanced algorithms, and overcome research challenges through collaboration with the quantum industry. The initiative will utilize flexible contracting authorities to align research with commercial needs and bolster domestic capabilities. The QuantumEAGLe Special Notice has been posted on SAM.gov for further engagement.
