MAGA Figure Raises Concerns Over McConnell's Health and National Security
Senator Mitch McConnell is facing increased scrutiny regarding his health following comments from Kylie Jane Kremer, executive director of the MAGA organization Women for America First. Kremer described the situation surrounding McConnell as a potential national security issue after it was revealed that the 84-year-old senator had received CPR following a heart attack on June 14. His office confirmed he is recovering in a hospital, but details about his condition remain sparse.
Kremer raised concerns about Elaine Chao, McConnell's wife, who met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng just three days after McConnell's hospitalization. Kremer questioned what authority Chao had to meet with a senior member of the Chinese Communist Party while her husband was incapacitated. Chao has not held a government position since resigning as transportation secretary on January 7, 2021, following the Capitol riots.
In her post on X, Kremer suggested that if Chao was representing the U.S. government, the State Department should clarify this. She also warned that Chao's meeting could potentially violate the Logan Act, which prohibits unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments on behalf of the U.S. The Chinese embassy stated that Chao and Han discussed cooperation between the two nations.
Kremer emphasized the importance of transparency regarding McConnell's health, stating, "These questions are even more important because there are still serious unanswered questions about Senator McConnell’s condition." She concluded that the American public deserves answers about the senator's status during this critical time.
McConnell's office has been tight-lipped about his condition, only stating that he "continues to improve" and appreciates the support he is receiving. However, they have not disclosed whether he is conscious or who is managing his office during his recovery. The senator's hospitalization was only confirmed after the Daily Beast pressed for information, highlighting the lack of communication from his team.
