Joshua Wong Faces Sentencing in September Under National Security Law
Joshua Wong, a prominent Hong Kong democracy activist, is scheduled for sentencing on September 2 in a case under the national security law imposed by Beijing. Wong was arrested in June 2025 on charges of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, an allegation stemming from his efforts to solicit international sanctions against Hong Kong. This case marks Wong's second charge under the national security law, which has been criticized for curtailing the pro-democracy movement in the city.
The judiciary's website indicates that the plea and sentencing hearing will take place on September 2, expected to last one day. Wong is accused of conspiring with fellow activist Nathan Law and others to request foreign entities to impose sanctions or engage in hostile actions against Hong Kong or China during a specified period in 2020.
The charges carry severe penalties, ranging from three to ten years in prison, with the possibility of life imprisonment if deemed particularly serious. Wong previously pleaded guilty in a separate national security case related to an unofficial primary election, resulting in a sentence of four years and eight months.
Wong gained prominence in 2012 as a high school student leading protests against national education policies. He became a well-known figure during the 2014 Occupy Movement and co-founded the political party Demosisto in 2016. His activism has drawn international attention, but it has also led to accusations from Beijing that he advocates for Hong Kong independence and seeks foreign interference.
Demosisto disbanded following the implementation of the national security law in 2020, which authorities claim has restored stability to Hong Kong. Additionally, Hong Kong authorities have offered rewards for information leading to the arrest of Law, who has relocated to Britain, and other activists living abroad. Recently, a London court sentenced two individuals for spying on dissidents, including Law, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement.
