AeroVironment Shares Surge 6% Following $464.8 Million Army Laser Contract
AeroVironment, Inc. has experienced a notable increase in its stock price, rising 6% to $153.93, following the announcement of a $464.8 million contract awarded by the U.S. Army for the production of directed-energy laser systems. This contract is a groundbreaking development in the counter-drone market, as it represents the first production contract for directed energy in U.S. history, transitioning laser weapons from prototype stages to operational units designed to counter unmanned aircraft threats.
The contract will fund the delivery of numerous LOCUST X3 laser weapon systems under the Army's Enduring-High Energy Laser program. The LOCUST X3 is a versatile 30-kilowatt system intended for integration with the Army’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, with configurations being evaluated for various military applications. AeroVironment is also expanding its Albuquerque, New Mexico facility to support this production ramp, investing $30 million in the process.
The announcement has had a ripple effect across the defense sector, with other companies such as Unusual Machines and Red Cat Holdings seeing stock increases of 1% and 3%, respectively, despite not receiving any new contracts themselves. This trend indicates a sector-wide optimism regarding counter-drone technologies and the potential for further military contracts.
AeroVironment's CEO, Wahid Nawabi, described the contract as a defining moment for the company and modern defense capabilities. The company has indicated that the Enduring High Energy Laser program could total around half a billion dollars, making this award a significant step in that direction. Furthermore, the Federal Aviation Administration's recent clearance of directed-energy systems for domestic airspace use expands the operational scope for these technologies beyond international conflicts.
As the defense sector continues to adapt to emerging threats, the implications of this contract for AeroVironment and its competitors will be closely monitored. The success of the LOCUST X3 program and the potential for additional Army and Navy contracts will be crucial for the future performance of companies involved in the counter-drone market.
