Joshua Wong Pleads Guilty to Foreign Collusion Charges in Hong Kong
Joshua Wong, a well-known pro-democracy campaigner in Hong Kong, has pleaded guilty to collusion with foreign entities, a serious charge that could result in a life sentence under the National Security Law (NSL) imposed by Beijing. The 29-year-old activist is currently serving a sentence of four years and eight months for a previous conviction of subversion, another violation of the NSL, which he received in late 2024. The court has indicated that Wong's sentencing will occur at a later date, with his current sentence set to conclude early next year.
Wong has been a prominent figure in Hong Kong's political landscape, notably leading the Umbrella Movement in 2014 and participating in significant pro-democracy protests in 2019. The latest charges against him allege that he conspired with other activists, including Nathan Law, to solicit foreign governments to impose sanctions on China. These activities reportedly took place between July and November 2020, coinciding with the introduction of the NSL, which has been criticized for stifling dissent and creating a climate of fear in Hong Kong.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Wong and Law engaged in international lobbying efforts, including visits to the United States, Germany, and Italy. Prosecutors also accused them of promoting the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, a U.S. law that mandates sanctions against Chinese officials responsible for human rights violations in Hong Kong.
Despite the disbandment of their political party, Demosistō, Wong has remained steadfast in his commitment to political activism and has sought international support. Wong, who appeared in court wearing a dark blue shirt and glasses, did not contest the allegations against him.
Supporters gathered in court to show their solidarity, with some expressing their hope for a lenient sentence given Wong's lengthy imprisonment. Fellow activists noted that Wong has continued to pursue personal interests while incarcerated, including learning to play the guitar and maintaining his fitness. His supporters remain hopeful for his resilience amid ongoing legal challenges.
