Leica to Release Limited-Edition Summicron-M 66mm F/2 Lens Inspired by Spy Lens
Leica is preparing to unveil a new lens, the Summicron-M 66mm F/2, with an announcement expected on September 3, 2026. This limited-edition lens is rumored to be inspired by the Elcan 66mm F/2, a rare lens originally developed by Dr. Walter Mandler for the US Navy during the 1960s. The Elcan lens, which was never sold to the public, is highly sought after, with only about 200 units produced, many of which were lost or destroyed in service.
Known as the "spy lens," the Elcan 66mm F/2 was also utilized by NATO during the Cold War, adding to its allure among collectors. Its unique focal length and optical performance are notable, offering excellent sharpness and color rendition, particularly in the center, along with smooth bokeh.
The new Summicron-M 66mm F/2 is expected to be part of Leica's Classic Collection, appealing to both collectors and photographers. With only 660 units planned for production, the lens is anticipated to be a highly coveted item. Its price is projected to be around $9,000, reflecting its limited availability and historical connection.
While the details remain speculative until Leica's official announcement, the potential for the new lens to replicate the optical characteristics of the original Elcan could make it a significant addition to the M-mount lineup. Enthusiasts and collectors alike are eager to see how Leica will honor the legacy of the Elcan with this new release.
