Shatner and Nimoy's Collaboration on 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'
William Shatner and the late Leonard Nimoy are best known for their roles as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock in the original 'Star Trek' series, which aired from 1966 to 1969. However, their first collaboration predates this iconic series. Both actors appeared in an episode of the classic spy drama 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.', which aired from 1964 to 1968 and featured agents working for the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (UNCLE). Shatner and Nimoy were part of Season 1, Episode 9, titled 'The Project Strigas Affair', where they played characters involved in a plot to escalate tensions between East and West. Shatner portrayed Michael Donfield, while Nimoy took on the role of Vladeck. Although this episode did not achieve the lasting impact of their work in 'Star Trek', it marked the beginning of their professional relationship. Interestingly, Shatner did not remember this earlier collaboration when he and Nimoy discussed it during a joint appearance on 'Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee' in 1996. Nimoy reminded him of their shared experience, noting that they had worked together without direct interaction. Shatner expressed surprise at Nimoy's recollection, admitting he had no memory of the event. He later reiterated this sentiment in a 2015 interview with StarTrek.com, reflecting on how he viewed Nimoy as just another face at the time. This early encounter in 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' serves as a fascinating footnote in the history of two of television's most beloved characters.
