Analyst Challenges September's Historical Stock Market Weakness

Analyst Challenges September's Historical Stock Market Weakness

September has historically been a challenging month for stock portfolios, but Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group, suggests that this year may defy that trend. Speaking on CNBC, Detrick pointed out that the reputation of September as the worst month for the S&P 500 is largely based on years when the market entered September in a weakened state. This year, however, the market is showing strength, which could lead to a different outcome.

Detrick highlighted that the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) has increased by 5.47% over the past month and 12.82% year-to-date, indicating a robust market environment. He noted that volatility remains low, with the VIX at 14.51, suggesting a calm market atmosphere. This contrasts sharply with the weak Augusts that typically precede historically poor Septembers.

During the broadcast, Detrick emphasized the importance of market conditions leading into September. He stated, "September is the worst month on average, the worst since 1950, the worst the last ten years. Usually, the bad Septembers historically are when you have a weak market coming into it. That’s not the case right now."

He also pointed out that nearly 70% of S&P 500 stocks are currently above their 200-day moving average, a sign of a broad market uptrend. This breadth of participation is often indicative of strong performance rather than weakness.

Matt Powers, managing partner, reinforced Detrick's perspective by highlighting solid earnings growth across sectors, with ten out of eleven sectors reporting double-digit growth. This broad participation in profit growth contrasts with previous cycles where September selloffs were often linked to declining earnings revisions.

Consumer sentiment, while improving, remains below neutral levels according to the University of Michigan index, which rebounded to 55.2 in July. However, the overall trend is positive, suggesting potential for demand growth.

Bilal Little, global ETF strategist, noted that low trading volume in August could lead to significant market moves once trading activity picks up again. He cautioned that while the current calm may seem stable, it could shift quickly.

The bond market presents a potential risk, with the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.67%, near its highs. Elevated yields can pressure equity valuations, independent of seasonal trends. The upcoming Jackson Hole event featuring Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is a key focus for traders, as any indication of interest rate cuts could significantly impact market dynamics.

Detrick's analysis suggests that the conditions leading into September this year are markedly different from those in the past, with broad market participation, strong earnings, and contained volatility. The historical data may not apply as neatly this time around, making it crucial for investors to consider current market conditions rather than relying solely on past trends.
